In this ancient Rahu temple of Uttarakhand, Rahu is worshipped along with Lord Shiva. There are very few temples in India where Rahu and Shiva are worshipped together. It is believed that Rahu and Ketu are two parts of the demon Swarbhanu’s body. During Samudra Manthan, Swarbhanu deceitfully drank the nectar of immortality. Lord Vishnu then cut off his head with the Sudarshan Chakra. Due to the effect of the nectar, he became immortal – his head came to be known as Rahu and his body as Ketu. It is believed that Rahu’s head fell at this very place, which is now famous as the Rahu Temple.
Devotees come here for peace from Rahu-related doshas. Especially for relief from Kaal Sarp Dosh, Rahu-Ketu Dosh, and Rahu Mahadasha, prayers are offered here. According to some beliefs, this temple was established by Adi Shankaracharya, while another belief says that the Pandavas built this temple during their journey to heaven and worshipped Shiva and Rahu here to avoid Rahu dosh.
