Lord Vishnu came to know of his deceit and he severed his head from the torso with his Sudarshan Chakra so that he would not become immortal. But due to drinking the nectar, Svarbhanu had become immortal. The lower part of Svarbhanu became Ketu while the part with the head above the torso was called Rahu. This head part, after being cut by the Sudarshan, fell at this very place in Pauri which became known as the Rahu Temple.
It is believed that people go to the Rahu temple to remove various faults caused by Rahu. Meanwhile, puja and prayers are offered here especially to get relief from Kaal Sarp Dosha, Rahu-Ketu Dosha, and Rahu Mahadasha. It is mentioned in many places that this temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya Ji.
But there is another story regarding this temple in which it is stated that it was built by the Pandavas at the time when they were on the Swargarohini journey; then to avoid Rahu Dosha, the Pandavas had worshipped Lord Shiva and Rahu in this very temple.
