It is believed that the very first sound of creation, “Om,” emerged from the mouth of Lord Brahma, and Vedic recitation begins only with Om. It is said that this is the only place on Earth where Shiva and Parvati play Chaupar (dice) every night. After the Shayan Aarti, the dice board is set and the sanctum remains closed till morning.
The Rahu Paithani Temple in Uttarakhand is one of the rare temples where both Lord Shiva and Rahu are worshipped together. According to legend, Rahu and Ketu were originally the demon Swarbhanu. During the Samudra Manthan, Swarbhanu deceived the gods by sitting among them and drinking amrit. Realizing the deception, Lord Vishnu severed his head with the Sudarshan Chakra. Since he had tasted amrit, he became immortal. The head portion became Rahu, and the body became Ketu. The severed head is believed to have fallen in Pauri, where the Rahu Temple now stands.
