Mahalaya Amavasya is the final tithi of Pitru Paksha and is also known as Sarvapitru Amavasya. On this day, there is a tradition of performing Shradh and Tarpan for known and unknown ancestors, making it a significant occasion marking the culmination of Pitru Paksha.

If the death date of an ancestor is unknown or Shradh could not be performed on the prescribed date, it is traditionally believed that Shradh can be performed for them on Sarvapitru Amavasya. This makes the day especially important for completing missed ancestral rituals for the family.

Achaman, Pranayama and purification will be performed.

Sankalp & Dev Pujan

Sankalp will be taken by stating the Gotra, ancestor's name and the purpose of the Shradh, followed by Dev Pujan and Vishnu Smaran.
Number-2

Pitru Avahan & Til Tarpan

The relevant ancestors will be invoked, followed by Tarpan with sesame-infused water.
Number-3

Pind Nirmaan, Sthapana & Arpan

Pinds will be prepared using rice/Akshat, sesame, ghee, honey, etc., as per tradition. The Pinds will be established and offered in the names and Gotras of the ancestors, followed by offerings of Til, Kush and water.

Pitru Tarpan, Prarthana & Shradh

Pitru Tarpan and Pitru Prarthana will be performed, followed by offerings of food and other items for the ancestors.
Number-5

Brahman Pujan/Bhojan, Dakshina & Pind Visarjan

Brahman Pujan/Bhojan will be followed by Dakshina and blessings. Pind Visarjan and prayers for the ancestors will then complete the ritual.
