Lord Brahma narrated to Sage Vyasa that an asura named Gaya performed severe penance, causing suffering to gods and humans alike. The troubled gods approached Lord Vishnu, who assured them of Gaya’s end. While fetching a lotus from the Kshira Sagara for Lord Shiva’s worship, Gaya Asura, deluded by Vishnumaya, lay down in the region of Kikata. At that time, Lord Vishnu slew him with His mace, bringing relief to gods and humans. Lord Vishnu then declared that Gaya’s body would henceforth be worshipped as a sacred land of merit, and any yajna, Shraadh, or pind daan performed here would help devotees attain higher lokas and divine merit.

The city of Gaya in Bihar, also known as Bodh Gaya, holds special importance for pind daan. It is believed that performing pind daan and tarpan here grants liberation to ancestors, which is why this sacred place is called Moksha Sthali. Scriptures say that apart from Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh, all deities reside here. The significance of Gaya is reflected in the fact that on the banks of the Phalgu River, the Shraadh and pind daan rituals were performed for the peace and liberation of King Dasharatha’s soul. Gaya is also described in the Vayu Purana, Garuda Purana, and Vishnu Purana.
The process of tarpan and pind daan has continued since ancient times on the sacred pind vedis around Gaya. According to the Skanda Purana, during the Mahabharata war, Yudhishthira performed pind daan at the Dharmaranya Vedi for the peace and liberation of those who perished in battle. Among the five sacred vedis, the Dharmaranya Vedi is considered most important.
