Kashi is known as the city of Mahadev, and it is believed that nothing happens here without the will of Bhairav Baba. He is considered the guardian (Kotwal) of the entire city.According to mythology, once a dispute arose between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu over who was supreme. During the discussion, Brahma’s fifth head spoke disrespectfully about Lord Shiva. Enraged, Lord Shiva manifested Kaal Bhairav from his divine energy. Kaal Bhairav severed Brahma’s fifth head, but it remained stuck to his hand. Lord Shiva then said, “You are now afflicted with Brahma Hatya dosha. The only way to be freed is to wander across the three worlds, and where this head falls from your hand, you will be liberated.” While wandering, when Bhairav Baba reached Kashi, the head finally detached, freeing him from the dosha. Thereafter, Lord Shiva appointed Kaal Bhairav as the Kotwal (protector) of Kashi.
