Mahalaya Amavasya, also known as Sarva Pitru Amavasya, is the most important day of Pitru Paksha. It is the one day when we can pray for every single ancestor, especially for those whose day of passing we do not know. Our traditions tell us that on this day, the gates to the ancestral world are wide open. The rituals performed have a special power to reach them. The holy city of Kashi holds a very sacred place for these rites, known as Pishach Mochan Kund. The name itself means the 'pool of liberation for restless souls'. It is believed that this is where Lord Shiva blessed a man who was troubled by the spirit of a pishach, freeing the soul from its suffering.
