The Puranas tell us a story of a time when the world was terrorised by powerful demons like Chanda, Munda, and Raktabija. Raktabija had a special power - every drop of his blood that fell on the ground created another demon. To end this great evil, Maa Durga took the powerful form of Maa Kaalratri. Her skin was as dark as the night, her hair was wild, and she wore a garland of skulls. Though she looked fearsome, it was the fierce love of a mother protecting her children. With her great power, she destroyed the demons and drank every last drop of Raktabija's blood, ensuring that no evil was left. This story teaches us that Maa Kaalratri appears to destroy negativity and protect the good.
At the holy Shri Kalkaji Temple in New Delhi, a very sacred place where Maa Kalka is believed to have appeared herself, this ancient story comes to life through special rituals. On the holy day of Ashtami, a ‘Sankat Raksha Path’ is performed. This is a special prayer that asks Maa Kalka to protect her devotees from all dangers (sankat) and troubles, just as she protected the gods from the demons. Following this, a ‘Shatru Shanti Yagya’ is conducted. In this fire ceremony, offerings are made to calm down the ill-will of enemies (shatru) and bring peace. Performing these rituals at such a powerful temple on this sacred day is believed to carry our prayers directly to the divine mother.
