The temple houses a powerful form of Goddess Kali. In the idol, the Goddess is depicted standing on the chest of Lord Shiva, wearing a garland of skulls, holding weapons and severed heads, and with her tongue extended. Notably, the tongue of the deity in this temple is made of gold. The present temple structure was developed under the patronage of the Sabarna Roy Choudhury family and Babu Kaliprasad Dutta. Construction began in 1798 and was completed in 1809.
