A popular ritual on Janmashtami is offering "Chappan Bhog" or 56 types of food to Baal Krishna, representing dishes loved by Him. According to legend, Baal Krishna lifted the Govardhan Parvat to protect the people of Braj from Indra's wrath, going seven days without food. When the rains ceased on the eighth day, the people of Braj realised Krishna had not eaten anything for seven days. They asked Maa Yashoda how she fed her son, and she explained that she fed Krishna eight times a day. As a result, the people of Gokul prepared 56 types of food (eight dishes for each day) that Baal Krishna liked. It is believed that from this event, the tradition of offering 56 Bhog to Baal Krishna began. It is believed that offering 56 Bhog to Baal Krishna and performing a puja on Janmashtami pleases Him, and He fulfils the wishes of devotees. It is also said to attract divine prosperity, abundance, and wealth into the household. Additionally, Anna Daan on this day is considered a virtuous act, believed to bring happiness and prosperity to the home. Therefore, on the auspicious day of Krishna Janmashtami, during Rohini Nakshatra, Baal Krishna 56 Bhog Pujan and Anna Daan will be organised at Etteluthuperumal Temple, Tirunelveli.
