When the gods and demons together churned the ocean and the nectar (Amrit) appeared, Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini to distribute the nectar to the gods. At that time, the demon Swarbhanu deceitfully sat among the gods and tried to drink the nectar.
Seeing this, the Sun and Moon informed Lord Vishnu, who then used his Sudarshan Chakra to cut off Swarbhanu’s head from his body. Since Swarbhanu had already drunk the nectar, both his head and body became immortal. The head part became Rahu and the body part became Ketu. Because Ketu has no head, it is called the “directionless” planet. It is believed that for this reason, Ketu causes confusion and difficulty in making decisions. Ketu is also considered a planet that detaches a person from material life and leads them towards spirituality.

According to scriptures, to reduce the effects of Ketu, chanting the Ketu Mool Mantra 7,000 times and performing a special Havan is prescribed. This process is believed to calm the mind, bring clarity to thoughts, and help choose the right path in life. Since Lord Ganesha is considered the ruler of Ketu, the chanting of Ganesh Atharvashirsha and his special worship are included in this ritual. This remedy is considered especially effective if performed on Wednesday.
