In Sanatan Dharma, Navratri holds special significance as the nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshipped during these nine days. Each day of this auspicious occasion is dedicated to a specific form of the Goddess. The ninth day of Navratri, known as Navami, is considered very important. Worshipping Lakshmi on the auspicious day of Maha Navami is considered very auspicious. Among the various rituals, the Shodasa Mahalakshmi Kanya Pujan stands out as a unique ceremony that invokes the blessings of the 16 forms of Goddess Lakshmi. The Sanskrit term ‘Shodasa’ means 16 and this special Puja performed for the 16 powerful forms of the Goddesses can grant 16 kinds of blessings. Along with these 16 Goddesses, Lord Ganesh, Lord Kuber Maa Varahi, Maa Durga and Maa Shamala Devi also worshipped in a triangular formation. Therefore, totally 21 Deities will be worshipped during this puja to receive 21 kinds of blessings.

Additionally, Kanya Pujan, a significant ritual performed during Navratri that pays tribute to young girls who embody the avatars of Goddess Durga. According to tradition, Goddess Durga assumed the form of a young girl in order to fight the demon Kalasura, symbolising her universal creative powers. Kanya Pujan, also referred to as Kanjak Pujan, is typically performed on the eighth and ninth days of Navratri. This puja will involve 21 Kanyas, each lighting a diya to receive blessings from 21 different Deities. This year, Maha Navami falls on a Friday, which further enhances the significance of this puja, as Friday is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi. It is believed that performing the Sodasha Kanya Pujan on Friday during Maha Navami fulfils all desires and brings prosperity in life. In addition to this puja, a Chandi Havan will also take place, providing protection from negative energies. Therefore, on Maha Navami, Shodasha Lakshmi Kanya Pujan and Chandi Homa will be organised at the Etteluthuperumal Temple in Tirunelveli.
