The temple is said to be over 5,000 years old. According to the Puranas, it was built as an act of repentance following the incident where King Parikshit was bitten by Takshak Nag. After this, five primary idols were consecrated here, and it was believed that the descendants of those who worship here would be protected from snakebite afflictions. Takshak is considered the lord of the entire Naag lineage, and because of his presence, this site is known as an important place for relief from Kaal Sarp Dosh, Rahu Mahadasha, Naag Dosh, and serpent-related issues.
It is believed that offering prayers to the Shivling present here grants freedom from Kaal Sarp Dosh and protection from serpent-related difficulties. During the month of Sawan, the appearance of snakes around the temple adds to its sacred and mysterious nature.
Visiting Takshakeshwar Teerth is particularly believed to free devotees from Sarpa Dosh and Kaal Sarp Dosh, making it one of India’s most important spiritual sites. The temple’s architecture follows the Naagra style, with a grand shikhara (spire) and dome. A copper arghya surrounds the Shivling, and idols of Hanuman and Ganesh are also installed in the complex. Excavations conducted in 1992 revealed ancient relics and intricately carved stones linking the site to an ancient civilization, which the Archaeological Department continues to study.
