It is believed that the sound of “Om” was first uttered from the mouth of Brahma, the creator. Even Vedic recitation cannot begin without Om. It is also believed that the Narmada River itself flows here in the shape of “Om.” According to the scriptures, merely having darshan of Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga liberates one from all sins. A legend states that after wandering across the three worlds, Lord Shiva comes here to rest at night. It is said that this is the only temple on earth where Shiva and Parvati play dice together every night. After the night shayan aarti, the dice are laid out, and the sanctum is closed. Strangely, even though no one can enter inside at night, every morning the dice are found scattered, enhancing the temple’s divine significance. For this reason, after visiting all tirthas, visiting Omkareshwar is considered of special importance.
