Located in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, which is known as the city of Mahakal, the Shri Mayapati Hanuman Temple is dedicated to the wonderful Mayapati form of Lord Hanuman. Here, Hanuman ji is worshipped in a special form. According to the Ramayana, when Lakshman ji became unconscious during the Lanka war, Hanuman ji was crossing the ocean to get the Sanjivani herb. At that time, Ravana sent a magical demon named Kalnemi to stop him. Kalnemi, taking the form of a Brahmin and chanting the name of Ram, tried to confuse Hanuman ji, but Hanuman ji recognized his illusion and ended him.
After this, the gods gave Hanuman ji the title of “Mayapati”, meaning the master of illusion or the one who conquers illusion. He is worshipped here in this same form. The south-facing idol of Hanuman ji established in the temple is considered very awakened and influential.
