This Ekadashi is regarded as one of the most auspicious and result-oriented times to offer Tarpan to ancestors and seek their blessings. It is believed that during this period, through Tarpan, Pind Daan and Havan, ancestors received the right path toward peace. It is also believed that performing Tripindi Shraadh, Pind Daan and Til Tarpan on a sacred day like Saphala Ekadashi reduces the effects of Pitru Dosh, calms life’s obstacles, and invites ancestral grace into the family. This day is considered a golden opportunity to express gratitude toward ancestors, pray for their soul’s peace, and bring happiness, prosperity, and harmony into the household.
🕉️ In this ritual, Tripindi Shraadh and Pind Daan are special Vedic karmakands performed for the peace and liberation of ancestral souls. In Tripindi Shraadh, three pindas made of sesame seeds, rice and kusha grass are offered for three generations - father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. It is believed that this brings satisfaction to ancestral souls and restores their withheld blessings upon the family. In Pind Daan, pindas made from rice, sesame, flowers, and water are offered into a sacred river or pilgrimage site. This Maha Puja is considered highly effective for the removal of Pitru Dosh, and it is believed to enhance peace, happiness, and prosperity in life.

🛕 Story from the Garuda Purana Related to Gaya:
Brahma Ji narrated to Vyas Ji that an asura named Gaya performed severe penance and caused distress to both gods and humans. Troubled by this, the devatas approached Lord Vishnu, who assured them of relief. While Lord Vishnu was bringing a lotus from the Ksheer Sagar for Shiv Ji’s worship, the asura Gaya, enchanted by Vishnumaya, lay down in the land of Kikat. At that moment, Lord Vishnu ended his life using His mace for the welfare of gods and humans. Thereafter, Lord Vishnu declared that Gaya’s body would be worshipped as a sacred merit-giving land. It was proclaimed that yajnas, Shraadh and pind daan performed here would grant devotees access to Swarga and Brahmalok.

The age-old tradition of Tarpan and Pind Daan continues even today at the sacred Pind Vediyas surrounding Gaya. As per the Skanda Purana, after the Mahabharata war, Dharmaraj Yudhishthira performed Pind Daan at the Dharmaaranya Pind Vedi for the peace and repentance of the departed souls. In Hindu rituals, Dharmaaranya Vedi is counted among the Pancha Teertha Vediyas.
