Ujjain, which is also called the city of Mahakal, is where the Mayapati Hanuman Temple is located. Here, Hanuman Ji is worshipped in the form of Mayapati. According to the story of Ramayana, when Lakshman Ji was injured during the Lanka war and Hanuman Ji was going to get the Sanjivani herb to save him, Ravana sent a demon named Kalnemi to stop him. Kalnemi was a deceiver and could change into any form. He took the form of a Brahmin and tried to confuse Hanuman Ji by chanting the name of Ram. But Hanuman Ji immediately recognized his deception and killed him. After this, all the gods blessed Hanuman Ji and he came to be known as “Mayapati”. Hanuman Ji is worshipped in this form in this temple of Ujjain. A south-facing idol of Hanuman Ji is installed here. It is believed that by having a glimpse and worshipping this form, the troubles of devotees are removed.
