Pleased with his sincere devotion, Lord Shiva appeared and asked him to seek a boon. Rishi Gautam requested that Ganga be brought to that place. Mother Ganga agreed, but on one condition - she would only manifest there if Lord Shiva Himself resided permanently at that spot. Lord Shiva accepted the condition and manifested there as the Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga. Following this, Ganga appeared in the form of the Godavari River and cleansed Rishi Gautam of all his sins. Hence, the Godavari is also known as the Ganga of the South. It is believed that having darshan of Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga fulfills one’s deepest wishes and grants liberation from the sins of past lives.
