Born as mind-born sons of Lord Brahma, these sages were more inclined toward spiritual wisdom than the creation of the world. Their deep desire for knowledge spread across realms, and pleased by their devotion, Lord Shiva appeared as Dakshinamurti to guide them.
This form of Adiyogi Shiv, facing south, is considered the first Guru (Adi Guru) and is described in scriptures as a compassionate teacher who shows the path to seekers of liberation.
