Ganga Saptami, also known as Ganga Jayanti or Jahnu Saptami, is a highly auspicious day that commemorates the rebirth of Goddess Ganga. As per Hindu scriptures, Ganga was originally brought to Earth by King Bhagiratha to liberate the souls of his ancestors. To prevent her overwhelming descent from destroying the Earth, Lord Shiva captured Ganga in his matted locks and gently released her flow. As she journeyed across the Earth, her powerful current disrupted the ashram of Sage Jahnu. In his anger, the sage drank up her entire stream. It was only after King Bhagiratha and the Devas prayed fervently that Sage Jahnu released Ganga from his ear. Thus, she was reborn and came to be known as Jahnavi, the daughter of Rishi Jahnu. According to scriptures, this divine event occurred on the Saptami Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaishakha, making this day exceptionally sacred. Devotees worship Maa Ganga on this day, believing it cleanses lifetimes of sins and invokes divine grace.

According to ancient legends, Sage Bhagirath performed intense penance to free his ancestors from their curse. Pleased by his severe penance, Goddess Ganga descended to Earth. However, her descent was so rapid that if she had fallen directly to Earth, it would have caused devastation and she would have ended up in the underworld. To prevent this disaster, Sage Bhagirath prayed to Lord Shiva. Consequently, Lord Shiva gathered Maa Ganga in his matted hair and Maa Ganga came to earth via Mount Kailash. This is why Lord Shiva is also known as Gangadhar. Hence, the Ganga ghats are not only known for bathing but also for worshipping Lord Shiva.
