In Uttarakhand, the Rahu Paithani Temple is dedicated to both Lord Shiva and Rahu. It is one of the few temples in the country where Rahu is worshipped alongside Shiva. According to legend, Rahu and Ketu are parts of the asura Swarbhanu’s body. During the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), Swarbhanu deceitfully sat among the devas and drank the nectar of immortality. When Lord Vishnu discovered his deception, he severed Swarbhanu’s head with his Sudarshan Chakra. Although Swarbhanu was decapitated, having consumed amrit, he became immortal. The lower part of his body became Ketu, and the severed head became Rahu. This head is said to have fallen at this very spot in Pauri, which is now known as the Rahu Temple.
