In Sanatana Dharma, Pitru Paksha holds a very special significance. This period is considered most auspicious for bringing peace to the souls of ancestors and receiving their blessings. While every day during Pitru Paksha is important, the most special of all is the Amavasya Tithi, also known as Sarvapitri Amavasya or Mahalaya Amavasya. This is the last day of Pitru Paksha and is considered extremely sacred. On this day, offerings can be made even for those ancestors whose date of death is unknown or for whom the rites were missed. For this reason, Mahalaya Amavasya is considered the best day for ancestral peace and for seeking comfort from Pitru Dosha.
According to religious texts, when the unfulfilled wishes or certain negative karmas of ancestors remain, their effects can be seen in the family in the form of Pitru Dosha. This may result in financial loss, family discord, and mental unrest. The Garuda Purana explains that for those whose last rites were not performed correctly, Narayan Bali, Naag Bali, and Pitru Shanti Mahapuja should be performed for the peace of their souls. It is believed that these rituals become even more fruitful when performed during Pitru Paksha.
The Garuda Purana also states that these pujas should be conducted by experienced priests on the banks of holy rivers. From this perspective, the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, where the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers meet, is considered the most sacred place. According to the scriptures, performing puja for ancestors at the Sangam is believed to help them attain moksha and brings blessings to their descendants. Not only this, but the evening Ganga Aarti at the Sangam is also considered very auspicious, and it is believed to help remove obstacles from the lives of devotees and fulfill their heartfelt wishes.
