The holy city of Gaya has a very special story. It is named after a great devotee, Gayasura. He performed such deep penance that the gods became worried. Lord Vishnu, pleased with his devotion, appeared before him. Gayasura asked for a boon that his body should become the purest of all holy places. Lord Vishnu granted his wish, and Gayasura’s body became the land of Gaya. He also gave a blessing that whoever performs Shraadh and Pind Daan here, their ancestors for many generations will receive moksha (liberation) and go to the heavenly abode of Lord Vishnu. This is why, for thousands of years, devotees have been coming to Gaya to perform these sacred duties for their ancestors.
This puja includes three important rituals. First is Pind Daan, where rice balls are offered. It is believed that this offering gives strength and satisfaction to the souls of our ancestors on their onward journey. The second is Til Tarpanam, an offering of black sesame seeds and water, which is said to quench the thirst of the departed souls. The third is Tripindi shraadh, a very important ritual for any ancestors who may have died an untimely or unnatural death, or for those whose yearly rituals may have been missed. This special Shraadh helps even those restless souls find peace and liberation. Performing these rituals at the sacred Dharmaranya Vedi in Gaya holds immense significance, as it is believed that even Dharmaraj Yudhishthir performed shraadh here for the peace of all those who died in the Mahabharata war.
