In the Satya Yuga, a fierce cosmic storm rose and threatened to destroy the world. The gods could not stop it. To save everyone, Bhagwan Vishnu went to Bhagwan Shiva for help. Shiva said that only Devi Shakti could end this destruction. So Vishnu did strict penance near the Haridra (turmeric) lake in the Saurashtra region. Pleased with his devotion, Devi Shakti agreed to appear as Maa Bagalamukhi.
Maa Bagalamukhi appeared yellow like turmeric, wearing yellow garments, and showing the sign of grabbing an enemy’s tongue. With her Stambhan Shakti (the power to immobilize), she seized the tongue of the demon Madanasura (also called Dantavakra), stopped his violence, and protected the world from the destructive storm. This divine power is known as Stambhan Shakti.
