The month of Sawan is considered dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is an especially auspicious time for his worship, fasting, and abhishekam. This year, the second Monday of Sawan coincides with another sacred tithi — Kamika Ekadashi, which is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. When Lord Shiva’s Monday and Lord Vishnu’s Ekadashi fall on the same day, it is considered a rare and divine alignment of cosmic balance.
On this special occasion, a spiritual ceremony is being held at the sacred Kamleshwar Mahadev Temple in Uttarakhand — ‘Kamleshwar Shiva–Vishnu Rudrabhishek and Kamal Daan Puja’. During the ritual, Lord Shiva will be offered Rudrabhishek with sacred items such as Ganga water, Panchamrit, Tulsi leaves, Belpatra, and lotus flowers. Located in the Guptkashi region of Uttarakhand, the Kamleshwar Mahadev Temple is regarded as a sacred place of worship for both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. According to an ancient legend, Lord Vishnu offered 1008 lotus flowers to Lord Shiva here to please Him. When he found one lotus missing, he offered one of his own eyes in its place — an act known as Chakshu Daan (offering of the eye). Pleased with this supreme devotion, Lord Shiva bestowed the Sudarshan Chakra upon him. Since then, this temple has come to symbolize the union and mutual grace of Shiva and Vishnu. Similarly, another childless couple performed the same ritual and were also blessed with a child. According to a famous legend mentioned in the Shiv Mahimna Stotra, when a great battle broke out between the gods and the demons, and the gods began to lose, they prayed to Lord Vishnu for protection. Lord Vishnu advised them to first worship Lord Shiva. He then accompanied the gods to the very place where the Kamleshwar Mahadev Temple now stands and began offering 1008 lotus flowers to Lord Shiva. To test their devotion, Lord Shiva secretly removed one lotus. To complete the offering, Lord Vishnu offered one of his own eyes in place of the missing lotus. Moved by this supreme act of devotion, Lord Shiva was greatly pleased and bestowed the Sudarshan Chakra upon Vishnu. This union of devotion, mythological history, and divine blessings makes the Kamleshwar Mahadev Temple an immensely significant pilgrimage site — a place believed to fulfill both spiritual growth and worldly desires.
