There are two forms of the Jyotirlinga here—Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar—with Mamleshwar located slightly across the southern bank of the river. Though physically separate, they are considered spiritually one.
The name “Omkareshwar” is rooted in the divine syllable ॐ (Om), said to be the first sound uttered by Lord Brahma, the creator. It is also believed that the Narmada River flows here in the sacred shape of Om. According to scriptures such as Skanda Purana, Shiva Purana, and Vayu Purana, just one darshan at Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga washes away sins and brings divine blessings.
Legend says that Lord Shiva, after journeying through all three realms, comes here to rest every night. It is the only known temple where Shiva and Parvati are believed to play dice (chaupar) together each night. After the night aarti, a chaupar board is laid in the sanctum, and though the doors remain shut, it’s said that every morning the dice are found scattered—adding to the temple’s divine mystery and importance.
Hence, after visiting all other holy sites, pilgrims come to Omkareshwar and offer the sacred waters they've collected. Only then is their pilgrimage considered complete.
