According to a legend, to end Lord Brahma’s ego, Lord Shiva took the form of Kaal Bhairav and severed one of Brahma's heads. Due to this, Kaal Bhairav was burdened with the sin of Brahma-hatya (killing of Brahman) and began wandering in a penitent form with Brahma’s skull in His hand, seeking alms (Kapala Bhiksha). Eventually, the skull dropped from His hand in Kashi, where He was freed from the sin. Since then, Shiva declared Him the guardian (Kotwal) of Kashi.

Kaal Bhairav severed Brahma's fifth head, but the head refused to leave his hand. Lord Shiva then told Kaal Bhairav, “You are now burdened with the sin of Brahmahatya (killing a Brahmin).
