Scriptures tell the story of how, to humble Lord Brahma’s ego, Lord Shiva assumed the form of Kaal Bhairav and severed one of Brahma’s heads. After this incident, Lord Bhairav wandered to seek redemption from the sin of Brahma Hatya (killing a Brahmin) and eventually reached Kashi, where he finally attained peace. From then on, he has been considered the guardian of Kashi, the one who looks after every devotee who visits.

Kaal Bhairav severed Brahma's fifth head, but the head refused to leave his hand. Lord Shiva then told Kaal Bhairav, “You are now burdened with the sin of Brahmahatya (killing a Brahmin). To rid yourself of this sin, you must wander across the three worlds. Thereafter, Lord Shiva appointed Kaal Bhairav as the Kotwal (guardian) of Kashi.
