Shri Khatu Shyam Ji is believed to be the Kaliyuga incarnation of the great Mahabharata warrior Barbarik, the grandson of Bhim and son of Ghatotkacha. Barbarik possessed three infallible arrows and had vowed to always support the weaker side in any battle. Upon learning of this vow, Lord Shri Krishna met Barbarik in the guise of a sage. Realizing that Barbarik’s involvement in the war would make it impossible to uphold dharma, Shri Krishna requested his head as a sacrifice for the greater good. Barbarik willingly offered his head. Pleased by this extraordinary act of devotion and sacrifice, Shri Krishna granted him a boon that in the age of Kaliyuga, he would be worshipped as “Shyam,” and anyone who remembers him with true devotion will have their wishes fulfilled. His head was placed on a high hill to witness the Mahabharata war. Later, this divine head manifested at a place called Khatu in Rajasthan, where the famous Shri Khatu Shyam Ji Temple now stands.
