As soon as Markandeya turned 14, Yamaraj came to take him. At that moment, Markandeya was absorbed in his worship of Lord Shiva. As Yamaraj approached to claim his soul, Lord Shiva appeared before him. Upon the manifestation of Lord Shiva, Yamaraj had to retreat. Lord Shiva declared that His devotee Markandeya would remain immortal, and his worship would precede even His own. Since then, the place became famous as Markandey Mahadev Temple, where both Markandeya and Lord Shiva are worshipped.
