To help us honour our ancestors, there is a special time every year called Pitru Paksha. It is believed that during these fifteen days, the souls of our forefathers come down to Earth to be with their families, hoping to receive our love, respect, and offerings.
The second day of this holy period, known as Dwitiya Shraadh, is a very important day to perform these sacred duties. This day is especially for remembering those ancestors who passed away on the Dwitiya tithi. To make these prayers even more powerful, this special Mahapuja is performed in the holy city of Kashi, also known as Varanasi. Kashi is believed to be the city of Lord Shiva, a place where souls can find moksha, or liberation. Within Kashi, there is a sacred pond called Pishach Mochan Kund. The Pishach Mochan Kund in Kashi is particularly known for its importance in Pitru Dosha Shanti. It is mentioned in the Garuda Purana and Kashi Khand, which describe how performing Pind Daan, Tarpan, and Pitru Dosha Nivaran pujas at this kund fulfills the unfulfilled wishes of ancestors and grants them peace and liberation.The history of the Pishach Mochan Kund is very ancient. It is said that this pilgrimage site existed even before the descent of the Ganges. The kund is associated with a story of a Brahmin who became a Pishach (demon) due to his actions. Under the guidance of Maharishi Valmiki, he worshipped Kapardeshwar Mahadev and bathed in the kund to attain liberation. From then on, the place became known as Pishach Mochan.
