The gods turned to Lord Vishnu, who assured them of his help. Using his divine power, Lord Vishnu made Gayasura lie down on the earth, where he struck him with his mace, bringing peace to the worlds. Lord Vishnu then blessed Gayasura, declaring his body would become a sacred site. It is believed that any devotee who performs Shraadh or Pind Daan at this site helps their ancestors find their way to heaven.
