There are many legends about Pitru Paksha, one of which comes from the Mahabharata period. After Karna reached heaven, he received gold and jewels but not food. When Karna asked Indra the reason, Indra replied that although Karna donated generously during his life, he never offered food or water to his ancestors. Indra then gave him 15 days on Earth to perform Shraadh for his ancestors. These 15 days are now known as Pitru Paksha or Shraadh.
