Scriptures narrate that when ego arose in Lord Brahma’s mind, Lord Shiva assumed the form of Kaal Bhairav and cut off Brahma’s fifth head. This act symbolizes the destruction of ego and the protection of righteousness. To free himself from the sin of Brahma-hatya, Kaal Bhairav wandered the earth until he attained liberation in Kashi. Since then, he has been worshipped as the “Kotwal of Kashi,” the guardian of the sacred city.

4 Prahar means that the divine services will be performed in four phases throughout the day:

Kaal Bhairav severed Brahma’s fifth head, but the head did not detach from his hand. Lord Shiva then told Kaal Bhairav, “Now you bear the sin of Brahmahatya (the killing of a Brahmin). To be freed from this sin, you must wander across the three worlds. The place where Brahma’s severed head falls from your hand is where you will be liberated from this curse.” Eventually, in Kashi, the severed head fell from Bhairav Baba’s hand, freeing him from the sin. After this, Lord Shiva appointed Kaal Bhairav as the Kotwal (guardian) of Kashi. It is believed that worshipping Baba Kaal Bhairav at the Shri Adi Kaal Bhairav Temple removes all sorrows, evil-eye effects, difficulties, and hardships from life.
In Kashi (Varanasi), the Shri Kaal Bhairav Temple carries deep religious and spiritual significance because it is dedicated to Kaal Bhairav, the fierce form of Lord Shiva. He is revered as the “Kotwal of Kashi,” the divine protector who oversees the city. He governs the realms of life, death, and spiritual order. According to tradition, no one can enter or reside in Varanasi without the permission of Kaal Bhairav, symbolizing his supreme authority and protective role in this ancient city.

It is said that Kaal Bhairav emerged from Lord Shiva to resolve the cosmic dispute between Brahma and Vishnu, thus establishing Shiva’s ultimate supremacy.
