In Hindu tradition, each day of Navratri is dedicated to the worship of a specific form of Goddess Durga. The sixth day is devoted to Maa Katyayani, who is also known as Amogh Phaldayini and Mahishasura Mardini. According to legend, pleased with the intense penance of Sage Katyayan, Goddess Durga took birth in his house, hence she was called Katyayani. Later, this form became renowned for slaying the mighty demon Mahishasura. The story narrates that Mahishasura had received many boons, making him invincible even to the gods. At last, with the prayers of the deities, a fierce form of the Goddess manifested and destroyed Mahishasura. Since then, she has been worshipped as Mahishasura Mardini, and it is believed that her devotion helps a seeker overcome life’s difficulties.
Another important aspect linked to Maa Katyayani is her Kavach (protective hymn) and Stotra. Scriptures mention that the Katyayani Kavach is believed to protect devotees from negative forces. Similarly, the Mahishasura Mardini Stotra recalls the valor and divine form of the Goddess. When this Stotra is recited along with a sacred Havan, the practice is considered even more complete. For this reason, on the sixth day of Navratri, a special ritual is being organized at the Uma Katyayani Shaktipeeth in Mathura.
