According to legend, Adi Shankaracharya is said to have ordered the original construction of this temple. Thousands of devotees gather here on Kartik Shukla Chaturdashi to participate in this sacred ritual. They light lamps, wishing for the happiness of children, believing that this worship will bring them Lord Shiva’s blessings.
A famous story is associated with Lord Krishna. It is said that he fasted and worshipped Lord Shiva with a lamp to fulfill the wish of his wife, Jambavati, who wanted a child. As a result of his devotion, he was blessed with a son named Swam. Similarly, a childless couple performed the same ritual and were later blessed with children.
According to the Shiva Mahimn Stotra, when the gods and demons fought and the gods were losing, they sought refuge with Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu advised them to first worship Lord Shiva. He then took the gods to the place where the Kamleshwar Mahadev Temple is located today, offering lotus flowers to Shiva. To test their devotion, Lord Shiva made one of the lotus flowers disappear. In response, Lord Vishnu decided to offer his eye in place of the lotus. Pleased by his dedication, Lord Shiva granted him the Sudarsan Chakra.
