Guru Purnima is a sacred day in Hindu tradition when we honor our teachers, both spiritual and worldly. It falls on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Ashadha month (June - July). Historically, this day is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Sage Vyasa, who compiled the Vedas and authored the Mahabharata. Thatās why Guru Purnima is also called Vyasa Purnima. Lord Dattatreya is a very special and unique form of God in Hinduism. He is the combined divine form of the three main deities - Brahma (creator), Vishnu (protector), and Shiva (destroyer). Because of this, he carries the qualities of creation, protection, and transformation all in one form. Thatās why he is called the Adi Guru, the complete and eternal teacher.
As per Bhagavata Purana, the Markandeya Purana, and the Brahmanda Purana, he was born to Sage Atri and Anusuya, and his life is a symbol of simplicity, wisdom, and deep spiritual knowledge. He lived as a wandering ascetic, owning nothing, teaching everything, and learning from nature and life itself. He believed everything around us - the earth, sky, animals, wind, and fire can be our teachers. He is often shown with three heads and six hands, along with a cow and four dogs, symbolizing the Vedas and creation.
