In Ujjain, famously known as the city of Mahakal, there is also a temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman called the Mayapati Hanuman Temple. In this temple, Lord Hanuman is worshipped as Mayapati, the master of illusion. According to Ramayana, during the Lanka war, when Lakshman was struck by a deadly arrow, Hanuman set out to bring the life-saving Sanjeevani herb. To block his way, Ravana sent the demon Kalnemi, who was skilled in the art of illusion and could disguise himself in any form. Kalnemi took the form of a Brahmin and began chanting the name of Lord Ram to trick Hanuman. But Hanuman immediately saw through the illusion and defeated Kalnemi. Pleased by this, the gods blessed Hanuman and declared that he would be known as Mayapati - the one who conquers illusion. In this form, Lord Hanuman is worshipped at the Mayapati Hanuman Temple in Ujjain. The idol in this temple faces south, and it is believed that worshipping this form of Hanuman helps remove all difficulties in a devotee’s life. The temple sees special significance on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Devotees who offer prayers here are believed to receive the powerful blessings of Veer Shiromani Hanuman.
