According to legend, Sage Mrigashringa and his wife Suvrata were performing intense penance to have a child. Pleased with their devotion, Lord Shiva granted them a son but also foretold that he would live only for 16 years. When their son, Markandeya, learned about his destined short life, he immersed himself in the worship of Lord Shiva and began chanting the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra. On his 16th birthday, as Yama (the god of death) came to claim his soul, Markandeya clung to a Shivalinga and called out to Lord Shiva. Moved by his unwavering devotion, Lord Shiva appeared, defeated Yama, and blessed His devotee with long life. This story makes the temple a symbol of protection and longevity. It is believed that performing Ayushya Yagya here with devotion dispels life’s major challenges and removes the fear of untimely death. Upon hearing this, the parents were devastated. On the advice of wise Brahmins, Markandeya's parents created a Shivling from sand at the confluence of the Ganga and Gomti rivers and began worshipping Lord Shiva. They immersed themselves in intense devotion to Lord Shiva.
As soon as Markandeya turned 14, Yamaraj came to take him. At that moment, Markandeya was absorbed in his worship of Lord Shiva. As Yamaraj approached to claim his soul, Lord Shiva appeared before him. Upon the manifestation of Lord Shiva, Yamaraj had to retreat. Lord Shiva declared that His devotee Markandeya would remain immortal, and his worship would precede even His own. Since then, the place became famous as Markandey Mahadev Temple, where both Markandeya and Lord Shiva are worshipped. On the day of Shivaratri, the temple witnesses even more crowds than the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. It is believed that Lord Shiva fulfills the wishes of all the devotees who worship here.
