Lord Krishna was born in a prison cell in Mathura, where his tyrant uncle Kansa had imprisoned his parents Vasudev and Devaki. Upon learning through prophecy that Devaki’s eighth son would be the cause of his death, Kansa imprisoned the couple. At midnight, when Krishna was born, Vasudev carried him across the Yamuna to Gokul, to the house of Nand and Yashoda, where he was raised with love. The 56 Bhog tradition is also rooted in scriptures. This grand offering includes sweets, savories, fruits, dairy preparations, and more. Sanatan Goswami’s elder brother, Srila Rupa Goswami, used to perform Govardhan Parikrama (circumambulation of Govardhan Hill) daily without fail. Deeply moved by his devotion, Lord Krishna appeared before him in the form of a young boy and instructed him to stop the strenuous parikrama. The Lord then took a Giriraj Shila (a stone from Govardhan), stood upon it, and began playing His flute. The divine melodies were so sweet that the stone began to melt. The Lord then told Sanatan Goswami that from that day onward, worshipping and circumambulating this sacred shila would be equivalent to performing a full Govardhan Parikrama.
Even today, it is believed that performing four circumambulations of the Radha Damodar Temple is equal to one full parikrama of Govardhan Hill.
