The sound “Om” is believed to have first emerged from the mouth of Brahma, the Creator, and no Vedic chanting begins without it. It is also believed that the Narmada River itself flows here in the shape of the sacred “Om.” According to scriptures, merely having darshan of Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga absolves one of all sins. The glory of Omkareshwar is described in the Skanda Purana, Shiva Purana, and Vayu Purana.
As per legend, after wandering through the three worlds, Lord Shiva comes here each night to rest. It is said that this is the only temple on earth where Shiva and Parvati play a game of chaupar every night. After the night’s shayan aarti, the game board is set inside the sanctum and the doors are closed. Mysteriously, even though no one can enter at night, the next morning the game pieces are found moved, as if played. This unique belief adds to the temple’s religious significance.
