In Sanatan Dharma, the fortnight of Pitru Paksha is the most sacred period to honour our forefathers. The last day, Mahalaya Amavasya, also called Sarvapitri Amavasya or Pitru Moksha Amavasya, is considered the most powerful. Ancestors whose Shraadh was missed, or whose Tithi is unknown, can be offered peace on this day.
A timeless lesson comes from the Mahabharata through the story of Karna. When the great warrior passed away, he was offered gold, jewels, and delicacies in the higher realms. Confused, he asked Yama, the lord of death, why this was happening. Yama explained that although Karna had given generously in life, he never offered food or water to his ancestors. Karna replied that he did not know who his ancestors were. Seeing his sincerity, Yama allowed him to return to Earth for fifteen days to perform Shraadh rituals for his forefathers. These fifteen days became Pitru Paksha, teaching us the eternal importance of remembering our ancestors. Their peace is essential for our own well-being, prosperity, and spiritual harmony.
