Shri Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, located in Madhya Pradesh on an island in the Narmada River, is one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The Jyotirlinga is present in two forms here – one is called Mamleshwar, and the other is Omkareshwar. Though separate, they are considered one Jyotirlinga.
A unique feature of this place is that the Narmada River flows here in the shape of the sacred syllable ‘ॐ’ (Om), which is why the site is known as Omkareshwar. It is believed that merely seeing this Jyotirlinga washes away one’s sins. Scriptures like the Skanda Purana, Shiva Purana, and Vayu Purana describe the greatness of this place. According to a local belief, Lord Shiva rests here every night, and this is said to be the only temple where Shiva and Parvati play a game of dice (chaupar) every night. After the night rituals, the dice board is set up inside the sanctum and the doors are closed. Strangely, every morning the dice are found scattered - despite the temple being locked all night.
