The foundational story of Lord Kaal Bhairav establishes him as the destroyer of ego and the grantor of moksha (liberation). As written in Shiva Purana - There was a debate among the three deities (Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva) about who was supreme. When Lord Shiva’s greatness became evident, Brahma felt offended and spoke disrespectfully towards Shiva. Seeing this, Lord Shiva became angry, and from that intense energy, the fierce form of Kaal Bhairav appeared. In anger, Lord Kaal Bhairav cut the fifth head of Brahma, symbolizing the destruction of ego and false pride. After this event, he wandered and finally settled in Kashi (Varanasi), becoming the city's protector, known as the Kotwal. By worshipping him on his Jayanti, you align yourself with this supreme power that conquers ego, fear, and even time itself.

Shri Kaal Bhairav Mandir- Nothing happens without the will of Bhairav Baba in Kashi, known as the city of Mahadev, and the care of the entire city is in his hands. According to the mythological story, once a debate arose between Brahma Ji and Vishnu Ji over who was the greatest among them. When Shiva Ji was mentioned during this discussion, Brahma Ji's fifth head criticized Shiva Ji, which made Shiva Ji angry. At that moment, Kaal Bhairav was born from the anger of Lord Shiva. Kaal Bhairav cut off the fifth head of Brahma Ji who was criticizing Shiva Ji, but that head was not separating from Kaal Bhairav's hand.
Then Shiva Ji told Kaal Bhairav, "You have incurred the sin of Brahma Hatya. There is only one way to erase this sin, that you travel through all three worlds. At the place where this fifth head of Brahma separates from your hand, you will be freed from this sin." Brahma Ji's head separated from Bhairav Baba's hand in Kashi, and he got liberation there. After this, Shiva Ji made Kaal Bhairav the Kotwal (chief police officer) of Kashi. It is believed that worshipping Baba Kaal Bhairav residing here also removes all sorrow, evil eye problems, disorders, and suffering.
