According to legend, during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), Mount Mandarachal was used as the churning rod, and Vasuki Naag was used as the rope. Due to the intense friction, Vasuki experienced severe burning sensations. To find relief, he sought refuge in Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. The deities advised him to drink the water of the Saraswati river and rest on the banks of the Ganga in Prayagraj. Following their advice, Vasuki did so and attained peace. The gods then requested Vasuki to remain at that place and help relieve human suffering. Vasuki agreed, and since then, this temple has been regarded as a sacred site for relief from Kaal Sarp Dosh.
