According to legend, during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean), the demon Swarbhanu deceived the gods and drank the nectar of immortality. When Lord Vishnu discovered this, he used his Sudarshan Chakra to sever Swarbhanu's head from his body. Due to the nectar, the head became 'Rahu' and the torso became 'Ketu'. It is believed that the spot where Rahu's severed head fell is where this temple was established.
