Thaipusam, also called Thaipoosam, is a sacred Hindu Tamil festival celebrated on the full moon day of the Thai month, coinciding with the Pusam nakshatra. It commemorates Lord Karthikeyan’s divine triumph over the asura Surapadman, achieved with the celestial Vel, a sacred spear gifted by Goddess Parvati. According to the Kanda Puranam, the asuras Surapadman, Tarakasuran, and Singamukhan gained near-immortality through Lord Shiva’s boons and began oppressing celestial beings. In response to the devas’ plea, Shiva manifested divine sparks, which were carried by Vayu, then Agni, and finally placed in Saravana Lake by Ganga, where they took the form of a divine child. Raised by the Kriththikas, the six infants merged into one, becoming Karthikeya, the six-headed deity. With Parvati’s divine Vel, Murugan waged war against the asuras, leading his army with Virabahu and his warriors. He ultimately split Surapadman with the Vel, transforming him into a peacock and a rooster, which became his mount and flag. This grand victory earned Lord Karthikeya the revered title of “God of War.”
