Barbarik had three powerful arrows and had vowed to always support the weaker side. Lord Krishna, disguised as a sage, tested him and realized that Barbarik’s involvement in the war could disrupt the balance of dharma. So Krishna asked him for his head (sheesh daan) as a sacrifice to uphold righteousness. Barbarik smilingly agreed and offered his head. Pleased by this supreme sacrifice, Krishna blessed him to be worshipped in Kaliyug as “Shyam”. He promised that anyone who remembers him with a pure heart will have their wishes fulfilled. It is said that Barbarik’s head, which witnessed the Mahabharata war, later appeared in Khatu (Rajasthan), where devotees now visit in large numbers to seek blessings for business, jobs, and success.
