It is believed that the first sound of creation - Om - emerged from the mouth of Brahma. Even Vedic recitation begins only with “ॐ”. It is also believed that Maa Narmada flows here naturally in the shape of “ॐ”. According to scriptures, a mere darshan of Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga grants liberation from all sins. The Skanda Purana, Shiva Purana, and Vayu Purana all mention the greatness of Omkareshwar.
According to legend, after wandering across all three worlds, Bhagwan Shiva comes here to rest at night. It is said that this is the only temple on Earth where Shiva and Parvati play chaupar (dice) every night. After the night shayan aarti, the chaupar board is laid out and the garbhagriha is closed. Surprisingly, even though no one can enter the sanctum at night—not even a bird—every morning the pieces on the board are found displaced. This mysterious event increases the spiritual significance of the temple.
It is believed that after completing the pilgrimage to all holy places, darshan at Omkareshwar makes the yatra truly complete. Pilgrims bring waters from all sacred rivers and offer them here; only then are all pilgrimages considered fulfilled.
