The idol of Goddess Kali installed here is in her fierce form. She is depicted standing on Lord Shiva’s chest, with a garland of severed heads around her neck, weapons and skulls in her hands, skulls tied around her waist, and her tongue extended with drops of blood dripping from it. It is notable that the tongue in the idol is made of gold.
The present temple structure was built under the patronage of the Sabarna Roy Choudhury family and Babu Kaliprasad Datto, starting in 1798 and completed in 1809. Kalighat Temple holds immense religious and cultural significance. For centuries, devotees have visited this temple to fulfil their wishes.
